My manager came and jumped on the till next to the new guys. He served some people, then it was my turn. But when I went to place my sandwich onto the counter, the woman behind me swiped it away and placed this huge basket onto the counter saying "I'm next!" I turned to her and said, "Excuse me, but I was before you."
"Oh I'm soooooo soooorry!" she sarcastically said. She rolled her eyes at me and wouldn't move her basket from the counter. I lost my temper and said, "You've jumped the queue! I was waiting to be served before you, and I've only got a sandwich!"
Cue her yelling that the staff at this shop are rude and disrespectful to their customers. I told her that I was a customer too and she chimed back saying that because I work here I should let the actual customers go first.
FUCK YOU. And lol 'actual customers'. Because I work at the store I'm not actually a customer didn't you know?!
My manager caved and said, "Charuby, calm down! Take your sandwich now, you can pay for it later."
I turned to the woman and said to her, "I'm on a fifteen minute break here, just so you know." and walked off. Because fuck her if she thinks she can push in front of me with a big basket of stuff and get away with it, just because I work here. I'm on a break, I'm not inclined to be falsely nice to you just because you're an 'actual customer'. This is my personal time right now, and I have EVERY right to defend myself.
EDIT: Forgot to add: I've finished now, for two weeks! No more shitty customers for two whole weeks. I am overjoyed!

She managed to hurt my brother enough to end their marriage. Yup.
The evil bitch monster of cheating cheated on him AGAIN, and didn't even bother to deny it when he confronted her. In fact, blamed her behavior on HIM. He's been too "depressed and negative" lately. yes, my brother's emotional state just OPENED UP YOUR VAGINA FOR ANOTHER MAN'S COCK. Fuck you, you bitch, and the horse you rode in on.
*ahem* sorry.

Unbelievable. I have three more days with my kids. two days for review, then their exam...holy crap, the year is almost done. Golly, this was a great bunch of kids. *sniff*

I made it through all of my massages, had three clients, and it was a full day. How? Well I had 2 2-hour clients, and 1 1-hour client. Which equals 5 hours of work. All three were DT clients. So it was a iffy on getting through the work. Because when I was doing the 2 hour sessions, my energy levels were plummeting, my mind was going nap?
But today was a good day. Kim's doing good. Her Mom and I did some retail shopping, tomorrow is almost completely booked solid. Sunday may get there. Being it's the day before Memorial Day, it may book it may not, it's a new pay period day. Tomorrow is the the last day of the payperiod. Ah well, I'm getting better and healthy. So I'm good with the decisions that I needed to make this week.
Have I mentioned I enjoy working at Elements, even with the drama, FFFAAARRR better than Massage Retreat and Spa.

RED-TAILED HAWK
Mandydax says, “I was just starting Mythbusters and there’s that sound in the opening credits just before Adam says ‘It’s SCIENTIFIC!’ They do a quick close up of his face with his hat brim pulled down and ‘screeeeee!’”
Wow, I’ll need to try to dig that one up! Some cursory searching online reveals that a) Mythbusters has a ton of different opening sequences, and b) none of them are the one you found. Looks like it’s time for me to go watch a whole bunch of Mythbusters. Oh, the humanity!

Dakegra: Did Bourne redefine the action genre? Discuss.
Me: Yes.
KyleCassidy: Bourne stood on the shoulders of Bond and John Woo. The view from that high up is pretty epic. Books not so actioney.
Dakegra: True.
Me: However, it was the Bourne films that made other contemporary action films look silly and overwrought. (…at least, in terms of mainstream American cinema.)
Me (later): Also, I should note that I’m not talking about the 3-hour 1988 Richard Chamberlain version of The Bourne Identity.
Dakegra: I’d not heard of that one. I feel I ought to watch it.

Mmm, cake.
I had a landline put in at home about 6 months ago. It turns out though my 'new' number last used for a local pub, the owners of which didn't bother to go online and change any info on websites when they changed it. It is also nearly the same as the number of ANOTHER local pub, just two numbers swapped round (theirs end 274, mine ends 247). So this has lead to some interesting calls. I spent all day a few months back going through every result on Google that had my number listed as the number for the first pub, which has helped somewhat, but I still get mis dialed calls for the other pub. I find it all kind of hilarious as I work for a totally different local pub.
Now on most calls I get the people are nice and polite about it, but this morning I had a real humdinger. I was in the bathroom, when my phone rang. I didn't make it down it time, and it went to my messaging service. When I checked my messages it was a call for the pub with a similar number to mine, and as it seemed an important call about accommodation for tonight, I called the lady who had left the message back to tell her she had mixed the number up. It went straight through to her voicemail, so I left a polite message telling her she'd dialed the wrong number and pointing out she'd called '247' not '274' and left it at that. My good deed done for the day, right?
Wrong. About ten minutes later she calls me back and yells at me that I need to have my number changed as it's MY fault she called the wrong place. If my number wasn't similar it wouldn't have gone through and she'd have known there and then her mistake, not ten minutes later. And how dare I call her personal number, I must be a weirdo. I simply told her I wanted to make sure she didn't turn up to the pub tonight to find she didn't have accommodation after all and I thought I was being helpful. Which according to her I wasn't, I was just being weird.
I don't think I'll be helpful anymore.
A minor annoyance about this whole issue though is when people calling for the pub that used to have my number find out it's changed they ask me what the new number is. Which I don't know. And they can be a bit snotty about that. I should find it out I guess.
And in case anyone is wondering why I don't have my number changed, it would be more of a pain to inform everyone with my number that it's been changed than it is to get these calls a few times a week.

3 Mile Drive: Crab Apple Section
May 23, 2013
Well today was a Returning of sort for me. As I returned to the Arboretum for the first time this year to take photographs. I took over 500 and kept 93. I would still really like to get a macro or equivalent, but it was a fun day. It wasn't a draining day, but I still needed a nap after I got home.
My energy levels are increasing slowly, but I'm getting better. Coughs are getting better. Had some unexpected guests in my photographs. I bird eating breakfast in one of the trees. And a little black insect looking over the pedal of one of the crab apple blossoms.

My hygienist was super-competent, hilarious, and adorable. We did have a moment when I near-shouted, "You graduated WHEN?" and she looked slightly trapped, because wow, young! But we totally hit it off, and because I have to go back for more cleaning-type follow-up, she was like, "I'm going to cancel your appointment with so-and-so and get you back in with me," because we bonded over my on-the-path-to-wellness teeth and gums, yo.
I am missing my niece Miss C something awful. I was going to try to lure my sister to bring her for a visit here, but if I can't make that happen soon, I might schedule another trip to Pittsburgh in the near future. Miss C told her mom recently that she wishes she had a version of me that was so teensy she could put it in her pocket and take me with her everywhere. I mean, how does a seven-year-old come up with pocket!Auntie Entre all on her own, right? That kid deserves a visit and also a trip to a bouncy castle.
My writing is going fairly well right now. Yeah. That may seem a random observation, but it's pretty big in my mind. Part of me still can't even believe I can write that sentence out and nod like, yes, true statement, this has in fact been the case for nearly a month now. What a huge relief, especially from the late fall through late winter when writing hardly happened at all for me. To any of you feeling blocked right now, you have my immense sympathies, because it can be such a horrid feeling, and it's so hard to see that there might be an end to the lack of writing when you're in a drought like that. I might at some point post a bit about how I'm going about making myself write these days and ask you all if you have any more tips you want to share.
Also, I'm still not getting most comment notifications to LJ, so bear with me if it takes me a few days to realize you replied somewhere. Or if I seem to traipse along blithely unaware you've replied to something I've said in an entry that's not mine, this is probably the reason.

This upcoming Saturday, I will be speaking at the College of Curiosity’s Conference of Curiosity in Chicago. My subject?
(Cue the dun dun DUNNNNN!*)
I will be speaking about The Sound and the Foley project, of course!
Subjects in my talk will range from items discussed here on the blog to subjects that (gasp!) I have not yet covered. Yes, that’s right: I’ll be bringing up some new material at the conference.
If you are in the Chicago area and would like to join in the fun, tickets are a suggested donation of $60, and include things like lunch and a very curious goodie bag. One of the other speakers is a man who was once the most dangerous man in the world, so, really, you shouldn’t miss this.
* Oh hey! I should also write about the history of the dramatic music sting…
Fan fiction and pro fiction are both very large places, which blur into each other here and there. My most comprehensive experience of them both is in Star Trek fandom, the main obsession of my coming-of-age years. In Star Trek, none of the writers own the characters and world they are writing in. They are owned by Paramount Pictures. Star Trek novels have the authors' names on the cover, but are © Copyright Paramount.
There have been times when it was very easy to get a Star Trek novel published, all you had to do was be a decent writer with a reasonable understanding of the characters, write a story that didn't go anywhere too inappropriate, and send it in in the appropriate manner and wait for it to be picked out of the pile. A lot of sci-fi writers grew up as Star Trek fans, and a lot of them wrote fanfic, and some of them also wrote official Star Trek fiction.
I have, on my shelves at home, a large collection of Star Trek fiction (pared down from an even larger collection I read but eventually decided I would never re-read). It includes some fanfic that is better than some of the official fic. It includes some fanfic that is written by the same authors as official fic (because, however well written it is, Paramount is not going to buy your novel that was elegantly plotted to put Ambassador Sarek into a situation where he decides an orgy is the logical choice). The official novels I have read include some masterpieces and some stinkers, and a lot of in-between. The fanfic of course does as well. Some of it, I have no idea why it didn't get officially published. Other writings, I totally know why (hello, ream of Jadzia Dax/Kira Nerys slashfic I downloaded and printed back when DS9 was on the air!).
I think Kindle Worlds could be a pretty cool new thing, but it has limitations - probably necessary ones. It's a lot more like writing an official Star Trek novel than writing fanfic. You're never going to truly own your work when you write about other peoples' worlds and characters. There will be limitations on the content of your official writing of them (no porn, nothing too out-of character, and whatever other arbitrary limitations the owners and creators come up with) and limitations on how it is sold.
If you want creative freedom and ownership of your work, you should make up your own worlds and characters. If you want creative freedom but want to write about other people's characters, you should write fanfic, but realize that it is fanfic, not pro fic: it is unofficial, not something you can sell legitimately. If you are itching to write a story about characters you don't own, but think you can do it within the right limitations, and don't care that you don't own or control it, than Kindle Worlds (or other tie-in fiction) is for you.
I've seen a lot of complaints about Kindle Worlds, but they all seem to be from people who were hoping to see fanfiction treated like original work, and are all sorts of disappointed for this reason. Unless you want to write fanfiction based on works in the public domain or Creative Commons, that's not going to happen.
The other big limitation of Kindle Worlds is that it has a very limited number of worlds available for writing in. That list may grow, but not as much as one might think. Creators that have historically kept a tight leash on spinoffs and frowned upon fanfiction will probably never release their work to Kindle Worlds, however many limitations they could apply therein.
Paw*Con is what we jokingly refer to the annual gathering of fellow friends that get together each spring. It's been in Kansas City and, of late, in Milwaukee. I'm hitting the road, shortly, and bringing food-n-games to share. I really can't wait! This is a gathering of my best friends; the sort of gathering that makes my life worth living!
This year will be at the home of Geemo and Quinn in Milwaukee and have at least a dozen furs descending on the place. There's a military museum trip planned as well as just hanging out, playing games, maybe watching movies, pizza-ing, and other such fun.
I'm hitting the road early since I got a rock in my windshield the other day and no place could squeeze me in for repairs before I left. So, with the help of my insurance company, I found a place en-route in Hudson, WI, where I could spin by at 8am and get the windshield replaced. From there, since I'll be on the road way too early, I'm going to be stopping at a State Park or two as I drive through Wisconsin.
I've not taken a road trip like this in a long while: I'm looking forward to it!
See you all later!

This is an AMAZING deal, you guys - I devoured Twixt the moment it arrived in the mail, and it's an incredible story. The characters are heart-capturing and complicated, the world is chillingly gorgeous, and plot is SO TWISTY that everybody had to drag me away from it to go to the Fairie Festival. THE FAIRIE FESTIVAL. There are few things that could stall me with the prospect of the Fairie Festival before me, guys. Here's the novel's description from Sarah's blog:
You wake upon the cold ground. As you struggle to rise, as your breath exhales like a ghost, you know only two things: You can’t remember who you are. And you’re being hunted.
No one sleeps in Abeo City. The lost souls gather indoors at night as Snatchers tear through the sky on black-feathered wings, stalking them. But inside the rotting walls of the Safe Houses comes a quieter, creeping danger. The people of Abeo City have forgotten their pasts, and they can trade locks of their hair to sinister women known only as the Sixers for an addictive drug. Nox will give you back a single memory–for a price.
Like the other lost souls, Lottie wakens in this harsh landscape and runs in terror from the Snatchers. But she soon comes to realize that she is not at all like the people of Abeo City. When she takes Nox, her memories remain a mystery, and the monsters who fill the sky at night refuse to snatch her. Trying to understand who she is, and how she ended up in such a hopeless place, Lottie bands together with other outcasts, including a brave and lovely girl named Charlie. In the darkness, and despite the threat of a monstrous end, love begins to grow. But as Lottie and Charlie plot their escape from Abeo City, Lottie’s dark secrets begin to surface, along with the disturbing truth about Twixt: a truth that could cost her everything.
Sarah is putting her novel out there for free for a limited time so that people who are interested in her work can have access to it. If you value my literary recommendations at all, give this one a read. It's a journey worth taking.
know anything worth the time?
For some reason I've never really liked him. Probably because of his character in Angel, that's the only reason I have and it's a bad one, I know. Just for some reason I have never found him attractive or even interesting at all.
And then last night, wham! He was so charming and sweet and just absolutely the cutest thing ever. And we kept making out. A Gothenburg's Liseberg amusement park for some weird reason and then in IKEA, where we got caught by the staff when we tried to sneak into one of the beds to have wild nekkid sex. And now I can't look at picture of him on Tumblr anymore without my vagina doing a little oooh dance.
Talking about being sexually frustrated, I'm watching Identity which has Queer as Folk (UK)'s Aidan Gillen being a sexy bastard. I swear, his swag, his sexy accent... So. Fucking. Hot. *fans self*

It must have happened quite recently. She's been talking to me a lot, following me around and staring up at me. But it wasn't until I saw her walking across the floor today and she bumped into a box of books that I realised her pupils have been blown wide for days. Just as I was thinking about this my daughter comes and tells me she thinks the cat can't see well anymore, that she was sniffing around for her water bowl and having trouble finding it. So I tried shining a bright light into her eyes just now and her pupils didn't change at all.
I know cats can survive when born blind but turning blind when they're 18 years old? I don't know if she can handle it. She doesn't seem to be in any pain though. Well, she's been rheumatic and limping for a few years but she never complains, she seems to be happy enough. She still takes those crazy cat running frenzies, or at least it hasn't been very long since she did it last. A couple of weeks maybe. Before she lost her sight, I guess.
*sighs*
I know. I'm being stupid. This is it, right? It's just... 18 years, you know.

He is appearing in The Hothouse, and as I realised after booking, not only does it feature Simm, but also Simon Russell Beale (who I last saw in the cinema broadcast of the National Theatre's Timon of Athens). The rest of the cast is equally impressive:
Harry Melling (best know as Dudley Dursley, but unrecognisable)
Christopher Timothy (who has got somewhat older since playing James Herriott),
Clive Rowe (among other things, he was in the Voyage of the Damned episode of Doctor Who),
Indira Varma (Suzie Costello of Torchwood) and
John Heffernan (I don't think I've seen him before, but I think he is going to be one to watch
I haven't seen the play before, and decided not to read any reviews before seeing it, so as to see it fresh
The play is set in an Institution. It's never explained what kind of institution, whether it is a rest home, a psychiatric hospital, or something more sinister - we never see any of the inmates (patients?), although we hear wails and screams, and learn that they are known by numbers, not names, and that they are locked into their rooms., and everything is run under the distant control of The Ministry
Simon Russell Beale is Roote, the director of the institution, initially merely ineffectual, but as the play proceeds, increasingly, frighteningly unhinged and unpredictable. Simm's Gibbs is coldly efficient, the perfect 'company man', apparently more in control of himself than the other staff members, (and perhaps therefore more culpable) .
As the play unfolds, we learn that one inmate has died, another has given birth, probably as a result of rape by one of the members of staff. We see the hapless Lamb (Harry Melling) subjected to mental and physical abuse in the name of experimentation, and things do not end well.
Despite the nature of the setting and subject matter of the play, it is full of very funny moments - as long as you don't think too closely about what you are laughing at. It's a very strong cast, and well worth seeing.
