The Germans have something similar only the cake bit is spiced then there's an orange marmalade/gelatinous orange layer then it's covered with bittersweet chocolate. Those are quite tasty, so I'm assuming Jaffa Cakes are somewhat similar.

The orange mixed with chocolate just doesn't sound good to me!

Exactly! Chocolate & orange together sound icky!

My favorite bit of that is imagining a bunch of periwigged judges deliberating cake v. biscuit.

They also argued that the distinction between cakes and biscuits is simply that biscuits go soft when stale, whereas cakes go hard. It was demonstrated that Jaffa Cakes become hard when stale and McVitie's won the case.[5]

It is a funny image!

they're not bad. i like the raspberry ones. not a fan of orange and chocolate together.

what part sounds icky to you? the sponge cake? the preserves? the bittersweet chocolate? the combo? i'm curious.

Mmmmm. Raspberry! Now *that* sounds good. Although I'm not sure about the sponge cake. I think Twinkies are quite icky. So if the sponge cake is too Twinkie-like I wouldn't like it. And the the yucky ooey-gooey orange goop doesn't sound good at all!

Yes, we are wierd but jaffa cakes are fantastic. It really works together and the jaffa part is actually fairly solid so the sponge is not soggy. I actually eat the sponge part first then the jaffa - but I am notorious for being wierd anyway.

Try eeet! :)

Yeah, it's the orange gloop that doesn't sound good to me...

Jaffa Cakes are wonderful! I get frustrated ever time I go somewhere locally that has a selection of McVities but they never have Jaffa Cakes. Maybe they don't ship well. I became addicted to them when we were in London. sceptre1067 would go out at the end of the day to a nearby pub and I would pick up a bottle of water and a box of Jaffa Cakes from the shop across the street and collapse in the hotel and watch TV.

I dunno... The orange jelly is what sounds icky to me. Also, the sponge cake description makes me afraid that they are like Twinkies.

They are actually quite yummy! My step-mum and her parents are both Brits. I had some 2 x-mas' ago. I know the concept is strange, but they are really good. You can get them here at the world market, but it is not as good as home made.

but...but...orange jelly *sounds* icky!

Those sound tasty. I love orange flavored chocolates too.

Orange flavored chocolates just aren't my thing, but the part that I think sounds super icky is that it is an orange jelly. ugh.

The orange goo scares me!

you're right, they're awful, you don't want to go anywhere *near* them

pssst, dibsy, that's thrown her off the scent. All the more for you and me, mate

Well said, sir, well said. It's hard to tell the truth about this, but they are awful. It's certainly a case of the Emperor's new clothes.

Good, good. Imagine if she tried to swap them for an American "cake", like a Twinkie or something. Makes me shudder just to think of it...
Aug. 6th, 2007 08:39 am (UTC)
I've never had a twinkie, and I'm not sure I want to...
Aug. 7th, 2007 03:37 am (UTC)
No. You don't want to. Twinkies are nasty!
BTW, I can still hear you, even when you whisper...
Aug. 6th, 2007 06:18 am (UTC)
I didn't like them. But, then again, I generally think the chocolate-orange combination is pretty horrible.
Aug. 7th, 2007 03:38 am (UTC)
The orange jelly they mention scares me. Sounds icky!
