I agree- the winning portfolio is a story about people, not a place. Boo. The second-place one; don't know that it necessarily tells a story about a place, but that opening shot with the airplanes is pretty amazing.

I can't believe you didn't make the short list. Boo.

Ugh... the composition is all wrong and the photos aren't very good. The second place winner I feel kind of the same about. There are certain "Nevers" in photography and both of these photographers sinned into the neverland. The only photo of Anna's that even remotely caugh my interest was the one with the writing/books/glasses. That was neat. But other than that - no.

Second place - great story, but again there were some issues (like the first picture - the boy has a bag of garbage growing out of his head... seriously - if you're a photographer you know to check the background to make sure odd articles aren't going to appear to grow out of or impale people in your photos!) I do like that his focus was a place that very few people know about or have seen. I've been to Cairo, I've seen the garbage city - it's... interesting/odd/sad and his photos do depict that but his use of lighting and such didn't really catch my attention.
Third place had some good shots. I really liked that you could see the texture in the picture with the bikes.

Alright - I could go on and on but I won't. The only thing I can say against your photos is, being a long time lover of National Geographic - they do tend to like people photos, so I can see why they chose sets that involved portratis (not saying it's right, just that I get it).

The other thing I thought of with the winners - they both have potential but they're obviously untrained and are a little off in their execution so this would be good for any of the three top finishers to become better photographers.

I think you already have a fantastic eye and you know how to compose your photographs properly. I can clearly see textures in your photos and your use of lighting is always so fantastic! You were too good for this scholarship! *grin* (Which is good because you're fantastic, but bad because it didn't help get you out of the country!) :)
